THE Met Office have raised their warning from a yellow - be aware - to amber - be prepared - for widespread snow showers across Scotland.

Wintry conditions are expected to grip the country from Wednesday (January 28) evening and through into Thursday (January 29) morning.

Snow amounts will be variable but over 5cm will accumulate at lower levels and up to 15cm on higher ground. Strong, gusting winds will lead to drifting and blizzard conditions at times, especially over higher routes.

Police Scotland has issued travel advice to motorists following this warning.

Inspector Neil Hewitson of the Roads Policing Unit said: "There is a risk of localised disruption to travel throughout Wednesday and Thursday and we would ask motorists to take precautions before they set off.

"If you are travelling you should ensure that you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions. Make sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed for several hours. "Charge your mobile phone and plan your route as well as alternative routes.
