Ayrshire College wants more men to consider a career in care and is hosting a Men into Care taster event on Wednesday 12 November at the College’s Kilmarnock Campus from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

The event is designed to give a flavour of all the care courses offered by the College - Health Care, Social Care and Early Years. Lecturers will provide information about courses, former male students who have gone onto a career in care will share their experiences, and there will be a range of practical sessions.

Jackie McLellan, Head of Learning and Skills for Care at the College said “This is a fantastic opportunity to sample a taste of student life and find out about the benefits of working in the care industry. Guest speakers will share their own experiences and outline opportunities in employment and education.” Mark Baillie, the College’s Ayr Campus student of the year for Health, Social Care and Early Years, is now studying at university. Mark said “As a mature student I was apprehensive about returning to education. However I was welcomed from day one and I soon settled in. I took part in a work placement that gave me great experience and an opportunity to put my learning into practice.” Former student Paul McGuffie from Galston has no regrets that he swapped his previous job of sixteen years as a driver for Barrs for going to college to study childcare. Paul said “It’s very important for children to have female and male role models to help them develop, and that they experience different kinds of understanding, interaction and play. I’m passionate that more men should be encouraged to work in the industry”.

The health and social care sector is expanding and the demand for qualified staff is rising. The College offers a range of courses in health, social care and early education providing hands-on training.
