THE company behind a proposed wind farm in Upper Nithsdale is reaching out to local businesses to ensure they will benefit if the proposal goes ahead.

Burcote wind has organised a “Meet the Buyer” event in partnership with Dumfries & Galloway Chamber of Commerce to allow local businesses to learn how they can win contracts that will be available during the construction of the proposed Sandy Knowe wind farm near Sanquhar, Kirkconnel and Kelloholm.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 9, in the Blackaddie Country House Hotel in Sanquhar and is open to businesses from across Dumfries & Galloway. The event will be split up into one-to-one sessions which will allow businesses to hear directly what will be expected during the procurement phase and how they can maximise their chances of winning part of the contract.

Fraser Campbell, Operations Director for Burcote Wind, said: “Burcote Wind has a strong focus on helping create economically and socially sustainable communities as a result of our projects. We are optimistic the Scottish Government will approve the Sandy Knowe wind farm soon and want to ensure local businesses are in a position to benefit.” He continued: “From those providing equipment hire, fencing, trade skills like electricians, right through to site security or even on-site catering, a huge variety of businesses are needed during the construction of a large project such as a wind farm. We are committed to ensuring services and equipment are provided by local companies and want to help them win as many of the contracts available as possible.” Gordon Mann, Chief Executive of Dumfries and Galloway Chamber of Commerce, added: “The Chamber is working hard to make sure that any capital project that gets consent is built using as much local labour and as many local businesses as possible. We have organised a number of successful Meet the Buyer sessions where local businesses can set out what they can do and also for them to understand the tendering process to make sure they are ready to make a successful bid when the time comes.”
