IT was meant to the fun run enjoyed by the community.

But this year’s Cumnock 10k was cancelled - after only TWO people from the town entered.

Organiser David Weir was left with no option but to pull the plug on the event due to the serious lack of interest.

It was meant to be held last Sunday but when just eight people entered - with six of them from outwith the local area - David cut his losses.

Having brought the event back two years ago, it was proving popular despite the atrocious conditions competitors faced in 2013.

The timing might have been wrong - it coincided with the September weekend - but David is stunned at the apathy from his local community.

Speaking to the Chronicle, he said: “The uptake on the race was, to put it mildly, pretty pathetic.

“Only two people from Cumnock registered for the race, which is a shame. I’d have thought people would want to support it. The first two years were really good and it felt like we’d built up a bit of momentum.

“Maybe it was because it was the September weekend but surely not that many people are going away. Who knows? It’s just disappointing.” He continued: “We always have to juggle the timing of the event to fit it in between the big Edinburgh and Glasgow races and that has always proved quite difficult.” David brought the race back in 2012 to give something back to the town. Starting out at Visions, there was a 10k race, a 5k race and a smaller fun-run for tots.

He will look at what went wrong this year and see if he can bring it back to life in 2015.

He added: “I don’t want to get too despondent as the last two went really well. This year just surprised me a little bit.

“I will try again next year and look at maybe bringing it forward to June and stay clear of the September weekend.

“It’s something for the whole community to enjoy and hopefully they’ll buy into things again next year.”
