THE former home of Man of Letters James Boswell will open to the public for one day.

Auchinleck House will throw open its doors on Sunday September 7.

The building preservation charity The Landmark Trust is having the free open day between 10am and 4pm.

It is part of the annual Ayrshire Doors Open Days programme and will give the public an opportunity to see inside this fascinating local building and learn more about its history.

Auchinleck House was built between 1755 and 1760 by Alexander Boswell, 8th Laird of Auchinleck and the father of James Boswell, the celebrated diarist and biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson.

It is one of the finest examples of an eighteenth-century country villa to survive in Scotland with its own grounds, river, ice-house and grotto and its historical association makes it of national importance.

The restoration of Auchinleck House was completed in 2001 by The Landmark Trust and was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland and the Royal Oak Foundation.

It is now available to let as self-catering holiday accommodation for up to thirteen people.

All are welcome at these free open days and there is no need to book. A free information leaflet will be available to explain the building’s history and restoration.
