NEARLY 500 metres of metal were stolen from two daring raids in Mauchline last week.

Cops are investigating the incidents, believed to be carried out by the same gang, which happened within a few hours of each other.

It’s likely the crooks would have had specialist knowledge - otherwise they are likely to have been electrocuted.

The first incident saw 250 metres of copper wire cable taken from telephone poles stolen near to Mauchline Mains between 11pm on Thursday August 14 and 6am the following morning.

There was also a further 200 metres of Copper wire cable nicked from poles near to Oxenshaw Terrace, between 11pm on August 15 and 7am the next morning.

As the value of metal has risen over the last few years, it has become a prime target for thieves.

Incidents, like the two most recent, happen in rural or quiet spots were witnesses are few and far between, PC Peter Brown said: “It can be very dangerous but usually the guys involved have an idea of what they are doing.

“There has certainly been an increase in metal crimes over the years as it’s a valuable commodity and worth stealing.

“If anyone knows any thing, please get in touch.” The thefts occured just days after Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill vowed to crack down on cable gangs.

Justice Minister Kenny MacAskill has lashed out at this type of theft, which has been prevalent across the country for a number of years.

He said: “Metal theft is simply not a victimless crime.

“As recent incidents have shown, the actions of a selfish minority create unnecessary cost, danger and disruption for the rest of the community.

“That is why the Scottish Government is bringing in tough new legislation to address metal theft, ensuring that all dealers are licensed and eliminating cash payments.

“We are also introducing better record keeping and identity checks to tackle this widespread problem.

“By reducing the outlets for stolen metal and the lure of ready cash we believe we can remove the incentive to steal.

“With tough legislation and enforcement, and continued work with police, companies like Scottish Power and the majority of reputable metal dealers, we believe we can end this crime.” Please contact PC Murdoch at Cumnock Police Office on 101 if you have any information.
