PRIME Minister David Cameron said Britain is going all-out to find a cure for dementia.

Mr Cameron, speaking at a summit of the world’s top experts last month, pledged increased research funding.

One East Ayrshire hospital has been at the forefront of dementia care and was recently praised for its high standards in a report.

East Ayrshire Community Hospital (EACH) in Cumnock was praised for its Marchburn Ward.

The Marchburn Ward specialises in dementia care and will no doubt be throwing its support behind the search for a cure.

The ward’s Forget-me-not Garden was singled out as a benefit to the hospital. The garden allows patients to spend time outdoors and stimulates their senses, while keeping them safe.

Katy Hawker, Dementia Advisor for East Ayrshire for Alzheimer’s Scotland, said: “We welcome any extra funding towards trying to find a cure for dementia.

“In the meantime, Alzheimer’s Scotland is involved in research and are working hard to find a cure for the illness.

“We are committed to making sure no one goes through dementia alone.

“It is fantastic that the government is taking this seriously.

“In Auchinleck we run a football memories group to help people rekindle memories using football.

Derek Barron, Associate Nurse Director, said: “We were pleased to hear the Prime Minister’s announcement regarding funding for dementia.

“As healthcare is a fully devolved matter, the specifics of the funding will not directly impact on how we deliver care in Scotland. However, any focus on improving dementia care and research is something we welcome as a shared vision of improvement.” Since the Prime Minister announced the plans to tackle dementia and Alzheimer’s a new report has revealed that seven simple lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of developing it.

Diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, a lack of exercise, smoking, and a poor education are believed to be key factors in triggering the disease.
