ONE of Mauchline’s most iconic buildings remains closed after a car smash left it in a dangerous condition.

Part of Poosie Nansies in Loudoun Street had to be demolished as it was deemed unsafe.

The car ploughed into the wall around 2pm on Tuesday June 17. Loudoun street was closed off as firefighters helped to remove the vehicle and stabilised the building.

The woman driving the car was taken to Ayr Hospital suffering from concussion and facial injuries.

The accident left a gaping hole in wall of an extension to the pub which juts onto the street.

However, as a safety precaution, that part of the building was flattened as a safety precaution.

A statement from East Ayrshire Council said: “Surveyors from the Council’s Building Standards Service attended to verify the stability of the building.

“Following this assessment, Building Standards initiated its emergency procedures under Section 29 of the Building (Scotland) Act 2003 to deal with this dangerous building and immediate action was taken to remove part of the building affected by the incident.

“The licensed premise is currently closed and Building Standards will be liaising with the owner, and the insurer company, to ensure such remedial works are carried out to allow the business to begin trading again.” The pub remains closed with no re-opening date set at the time of print.

Poosie Nansie’s is one of the best-known pubs in Ayrshire and has long been a place of interest of scholars and enthusiasts of Rabbie Burns, who drank there when he lived at Mossgiel Farm nearby.
