A MAMMOTH haggis has toppled a local group’s record.

Or has it?

The Mauchline Burns Club previously held the title for the world’s biggest haggis, set in 2009 when they presented their half-tonne pudding at the Holy Fair.

However, that was bettered when a ONE TONNE haggis was unveiled at the Royal Highland Show, Ingliston last Wednesday (June 18).

Hall’s of Scotland stunned onlookers with their massive 1010 kg concoction.

The haggis measured 9 feet 2 inches in length, 3 feet wide width and 2 feet 1 inch high.

However, the Mauchline Burns Club have disputed the validity of the new Guinness World Record.

Andrew Cooper said of the rival effort: “As far as I’m aware we still do hold the record.

“Our haggis was cooked in an ox stomach skin and I believe theirs was cooked in a synthetic skin, which is a completely different thing. A synthetic skin has almost no chance of splitting or bursting whilst the one we did was very risky.

“Ours was just over half a tonne but what I want to know is was theirs done with natural ingredients?” The enormous size of the new record breaking haggis saw it remain inside its dedicated truck as the official announcement was made that a new Guinness World Records title had been set.

The judging took place under strict surveillance from an official adjudicator.

A team of 12 people were involved in the making of the record breaking haggis using 1537lbs of select cuts of pork and pork offal, 734lbs of oatmeal, 86lbs of seasoning, 51lbs of onions.

What’s more, Guinness World Record’s confirmed Andrew’s suspisions that a bespoke casing was made for the attempt, meaning that the record set by the Mauchline Burns Club is still the largest all-natural haggis on record.
