COUNCIL chiefs this week told the Chronicle they are no closer to finding a permanent site for travelling people.

Finding a fixed base has been an ongoing concern - heightened recently when a group of around 30 camped up in Auchinleck’s Tesco Park and Cumnock Caponacre Industrial site.

There have been rumours that the former Knockshinnoch Colliery in New Cumnock site was one of the options on the council’s list the last time they searched for a location in 2011.

But they are still no closer to finding a solution to the problem.

Chris McAleavey, acting Director of Neighbourhood Services at East Ayrshire Council, said: “No decision had been taken regarding the establishment of a permanent travellers site within East Ayrshire. These matters are still being considered by East Ayrshire Council.”
