KILMARNOCK and Loudon MP Cathy Jamieson has donated a Kilmarnock FC scarf for a memorial ceremony in honour of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, when an FA Cup Semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough stadium turned to tragedy. Families of the 96 people who died, along with many survivors of the horrific events that day and the aftermath, meet every year for a memorial service at the home of Liverpool FC, Anfield.

Cathy donated the scarf after Liverpool Football Club asked fans, followers and institutions of any sport - not just football - to donate a scarf to the memorial service, with all received to be laid out on the pitch at Anfield on the day of the service in the shape of the number '96' Cathy said “The Hillsborough Disaster was a tragic event that ended the lives of 96 people who just wanted to watch a game of football.

"I was honoured to donate a Kilmarnock FC scarf in memory of the victims and I would like to thank my colleague Alison McGovern MP for giving me the opportunity, and for all the other work she does in her capacity as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hillsborough.

"It is important that we honour the memories of those who died, some of whom were children, and keep supporting the survivors and families of the victims in their quest for justice.

"The Hillsborough disaster should never have happened, and we have a shared duty to ensure that it never happens again. However, we also have a duty to secure justice for the 96 by bringing those responsible to account.”
