YET more locals have revealed they will be carrying the Commonwealth Baton this summer.

The Chronicle told last week how David Loy, 84, and Gregor Aitken, 16, were just two of almost 100 East Ayrshire people selected to carry the baton through East Ayrshire.

Now George Scott, Jessie Owens and Gette Fulton have all been confirmed, too.

George, 34, from Cumnock was delighted to discover he was one of the lucky ones.

George was chosen as a result of his charity exploits in recent years. He was nominated after raising thousands of pounds for Marie Curie Cancer Care, the British Heart Foundation, Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland and more recently Ayrshire Cancer Support. His fundraising efforts over the years have seen him travel the length and breadth of the country partaking in the Glasgow Half Marathon, the London and Edinburgh Marathons, a 10,000ft sky dive, the Tough Mudder obstacle race, three Peak Challenge and Scotland’s 105 mile Coast to Coast events.

He even has plans for an epic 400-mile bike ride from London to Edinburgh.

George said: “I’m chuffed to bits to be given the chance to be involved in the Queens Baton Relay for Glasgow 2014.

“It’s a massive honour and a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was surprised when I found out that my family had nominated me and really didn’t expect to get selected so when I received the email confirming my selection I was really shocked.” Cumnock Community Council secretary Jessie Owens was thrilled at the news she has been chosen to be a Queens Baton Bearer.

Jessie said: “Being Cumnock born and bred, it’s a great honour and I’m delighted and excited to be chosen to carry the Commonwealth Queens Baton knowing it has been carried round the Commonwealth countries and finally arriving here on June 21. It is something we should all be proud of.

“I’ll carry the Queens Baton with pride not only for my family and friends, but for the whole community here in Cumnock which I represent on the Community Council. This event only comes along once in a lifetime, and I shall cherish every moment. ” Gette Fulton, 74, is a popular fundraising figure in New Cumnock, having been involved in various groups over the years. Of her selection she quipped: “I was quietly chuffed about it. It’s an honour.

“It’s something to look forward to. It’s an honour for not just me but for New Cumnock to get the opportunity to do it.

“It’s nice. I take it as an honour for the work I’ve done down through the years.” The baton will arrive in Scotland on June 14 and will head to East Ayrshire on June 21 where it will visit communities between Dalmellington and Kilmarnock.
