FARMERS and homeowners are being warned to look after their high-value possessions after a number of thefts in recent weeks.

Local police have been in touch with the National Farmers Union after two Ifor Williams’ trailers were stolen from separate locations in the last week.

The first was taken from Shaw Farm in Mauchline on March 19, while the most recent was pinched from the Barony A Frame in Auchinleck between 4pm and 9.45pm on March 24, Both are believed to be valued in the thousands and cops believe crooks are targeting farmers and other landowners.

Police Scotland are also offering advice after several housebreakings over the last few weeks.

Constable Peter Brown from Kilmarnock Police Office said: “House breaking can have a long-lasting emotional impact on victims, leaving them feeling isolated and vulnerable. However, by implementing just a few simple measures you can reduce the chances of it happening to you. Following some simple and practical advice on how to deter thieves, can make you more secure in your home.

“Unfortunately, there are always individuals out there in our community looking for opportunities to break into your home and steal your property.” To help prevent such thefts Police Scotland are advising that good home security can prevent you from becoming a victim of this type of crime.

Constable Brown added: Make sure your back garden is secure & there’s a solid fence surrounding your home. Is your side gate sturdy & padlocked?

“Never leave tools or ladders lying around your garden. They can be used to break into your home.

Install security lighting to illuminate your garden (theives don’t like to be seen).

“Make sure doors and windows are fitted with a good quality locks (your insurance company may request this) and keep them locked- even if you’re only popping out for a minute.

“Installation of a visible intruder alarm acts as a strong deterrent.

“Make sure your house or car keys are not in view, or in easy reach of the windows or doors.

“Consider leaving lights/radio (for example) on a timer for the evening if house is vacant.” Anyone wishing further information (or advice) can contact PC Brown Safer Communities Unit, Kilmarnock.Tel: 01563 505010.
