SANDRA Osborne has urged East Ayrshire Council to stop dithering over their plans for Cumnock’s Glaisnock Street precinct.

The local MP has been inundated with complaints from constituents over the run-down facility and called for action to be taken immediately.

Last June, councillors and officials agreed that the building would be demolished and replaced with a landscaped area with the shops moving to other units close by.

But seven months on, there is still little sign of action and the Labour politician has called on the Council to take decisive action.

She said: “Constituent concern has been raised with me that the town centre regeneration for Cumnock seems to have come to a dead stop.

“I am told there has not been a meeting of the Town Centre Regeneration Liaison Committee since Rothesay House was opened last year.

“Whilst Rothesay House is a welcome addition to the town centre as well as the refurbishment of the town hall and the private investment that has been put into the Dumfries Arms Hotel, this cannot be a substitute for action on the shopping precinct that is long overdue.

“Various plans have been discussed previously and a reported £4 million was ring-fenced for the purpose, so I am seeking assurances from East Ayrshire Council about their intentions for the precinct and a timetable for action.” A shopkeeper this week confirmed to the Chronicle that they were still waiting on a phone call to determine what was happening.

While East Ayrshire Council seem certain to demolish the old building, doubts remain about where the shops will move to and what will happen to the land.

The Council say things are on-going and the whole process is fluid.
