Cruel con artists are using a Bedroom Tax scare to scam.

Police Scotland and East Ayrshire Council's Community Safety team are warning residents to be on the lookout for the bogus callers with this new ruse.

The cynical criminals are exploiting the under-occupancy element of welfare reform laws by going door to door asking residents for money for the "bedroom tax" and threatening them with eviction if they refuse to pay.

Cllr Tom Cook, East Ayrshire Council's Spokesperson for Improving Community Safety warns: "Neither we nor the housing associations would ever ask our tenants for cash at the door. We warn people to be vigilant and spread the word that this is a scam. We are working to spread the message and keep our tenants safe from this criminal activity." Sgt Iain Fitzsimmons of Police Scotland empathised the message: "Residents should be aware that these criminals will prey on people's fear, particularly those who are vulnerable and elderly. If you know someone who may be a target, please make sure they are safe and know who to contact if they are suspicious of any caller." If you see anything suspicious in your area call 999 and report it to the police, or if you have any information that is not an emergency, please contact Police Scotland on 101.
