PLANS to extend an opencast mine in Cumnock look set to be approved by council chiefs this week - despite fears it will increase noise pollution and reduce the amenity of the area.

The proposal by Kier Construction Limited at their existing Greenburn site is up for discussion at a planning meeting on Friday.

Kier say the proposed development will see approximately 750,000 tonnes of coal shifted in over two and a half years.

But the plans have been opposed by locals who have officially objected to the application.
