A DEVELOPER is hoping to build a major new windfarm on the site of a former opencast mine near New Cumnock.

The Peel Group have laid out their intentions in a consultation form to East Ayrshire Council to seek local views on their idea of building turbines at Garleffan between Cumnock and New Cumnock.

The area which they are looking at for the site was used by ATH Resources as an opencast mine - and it is now under restoration.

However, Peel have a strategic agreement with ATH to make use of restored mining sites for renewable energy.

The company are set to enter into discussions with the council as well as community councils around the area.
