THE River Ayr Way is set to Challenge walkers again this year - all in aid of Alfie Sharpe.

This year's 44-mile, two day trek is to raise funds for seriously ill 4-year-old Alfie who is suffering from stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rarer form of cancer.

He has so far proved unresponsive to treatment and his parents are facing up to the possibility of taking him abroad for help.

The River Ayr Way Challenge, at 22 miles per day, is the most popular and by far the most challenging event that takes place along the River Ayr Way annually.

Teams or individuals are welcome to enter, so get your friends or colleagues involved, enter a team, raise funds for Alfie and discover some of the most beautiful scenery that Ayrshire has to offer.

As usual, there will be checkpoints approx every five miles along the route which will provide refreshments and water but this year there will be a new twist with Ranger led activities at these checkpoints too.

The activities below will coincide with the walking challenge route and this will allow both members of the public and walkers of the RAW Challenge to take part.

The activities will be about two hours long and the timings are set to allow walkers of the challenge and members of the public to take part. Transport will be available to take participants back to the beginning of each event.

If you want to take part in the festival but are interested in a less strenuous walk then come along and take part in one of these activities

Join the Dusk Walk on Friday, July 20, meeting at 9pm at the Bowling Green car park at Catrine Voes Local Nature Reserve or meet at Aird's Moss, Mungo's Bridge on Saturday, July 21 at 11.30am for a Bird ID and Natural History walk with the Countryside Rangers. On Sunday, July 22, meet at 9am and join the Rangers in a Historical and Geocaching Walk from Catrine Caravan Park and Ice Cream Parlour to the Haugh Farm.

The RAW walking challenge costs £15 and for this you get checkpoint stations with refreshments and a River Ayr Way Pack with Goodies.

Contact 01563 554734 or email rangers@east-ayrshire.gov.uk for more information or to book a place on the Challenge or any of the other walks.
