Council marks Armed Forces Day

Members of the armed forces gathered at Council Headquarters in Kilmarnock yesterday to pay tribute to the contribution made by all those who serve or have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces.
A specially designed flag was raised as part of a universal show of support to mark Armed Forces Day, which is on Saturday 30 June. Armed Forces Day flags will also be flown where British servicemen and women are serving overseas, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Cyprus, Germany, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.
Provost Jim Todd said: "I was honoured to welcome serving personnel, veterans and cadet forces to Council headquarters to mark Armed Forces Day and have the opportunity to show our support and recognition. Each and every one of us greatly appreciates the outstanding contribution made to our society by the Armed Forces. The challenges they face and the roles they play are made a little bit easier when they know that their communities back home are proud of them and wish them well."
Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council, added: "We hope that by raising the flag we can help raise public awareness of the vital role that our Armed Forces, past and present, make and have made to our security and wellbeing."
Leader of the Labour Main Opposition, Councillor Maureen McKay, said: "I believe that we owe our servicemen and women and veterans - whether they served in peacetime, or a conflict, whether overseas or in the UK - a debt of gratitude. All have contributed; all have helped to lay the foundations of the prosperous society that we all enjoy today."
Councillor Tom Cook, Leader of the Conservative Group and Depute Leader of the Council, said: "This ceremony is a reminder to us all of the valuable contribution our Armed Forces have made, and continue to make, to the safety and security of our country. We should all be proud of the duties they carry out in what are often difficult circumstances."
