RESTORATION of an opencast site could have an unwelcome side effect - midges.

Scottish Coal hope to create the Galawhistle Extension at their Spireslack Complex to continue surface mining for at least another seven-and-a-hal years.

The plan would then see the area restored - including areas of wet heath, perfect breeding grounds for the summer pest.
