Councillor John Syme fears the news after the shock announcement from ATH.

DOZENS of workers face losing their jobs at Glenmuckloch opencast coal mine in another devastating blow for Upper Nithsdale.

ATH Resources last week admitted up to 60 employees could be axed after plans to extend the site were deferred due to the falling price of coal.

Local councillors John Syme and Jim Dempster, along with MSP Elaine Murray, met with the firm's Chief Executive Alistair Black and Group Development Officer Peter Morgan on Monday.

A 30-day consultation period has already begun and all employees have received a letter advising of the situation and the possibility 60 members of staff could be made redundant.
