Scottish first for Ayrshire mental health services

NHS Ayrshire & Arran's Forensic Rehabilitation unit, on the Ailsa Hospital site, is the first clinical area in Scotland to adopt a new tool which helps mental health services focus on recovery.
The Scottish Recovery Indicator 2 (SRI-2) is a national web-based tool which helps mental health practitioners both improve their practice and develop services.
Derek Barron, Associate Nurse Director - Mental Health Services, explains: "SRI-2 enables mental health practitioners to provide recovery-focused services by identifying existing strengths to build on, as well as areas for improvement. Completion of SRI-2 helps clinical areas to monitor their service improvements and provides reporting data, as well as connecting to a number of other important national mental health policies."
A SRI-2 champion working group was set up to work with mental health's clinical team to lead on SRI-2. Lindsay Kerr, Jan Thomson, Stuart McKenzie and Jacqueline MacPhail will now build on the unit's success so far by using SRI-2 to monitor service developments and improvements.
Simon Bradstreet, Director of the Scottish Recovery Network, developed the tool and supports its use. He comments: "In our experience Ayrshire and Arran Health Board have consistently shown their commitment to ensuring their services are recovery focused and person centred through the use of the SRI tool and more widely. One of the things which helps that is having strong leaders and enthusiastic practitioners who want to make ensure the services they provide are aligned to the experience of mental health recovery."
The achievement was also welcomed by Hugh Masters, Policy Lead for Care of Vulnerable Adults and Older People for the Scottish Government's Chief Nursing Officer.
He adds: "I'm delighted to see that NHS Ayrshire & Arran is pioneering the implementation of SRI 2 and would like to offer my thanks to all involved in this piece of work. I'm sure that SRI 2 will be an important tool in the further development of recovery services in NHS Ayrshire & Arran. I look forward to hearing about future progress and outcomes."
