Oral health team wins national award
NHS Ayrshire & Arran's Oral Health Promotion Team has won a prestigious national award. The team attended the awards ceremony in London and picked up the 'Best National Smile Month event' in The Dental Awards 2012.
For their entry, the Oral Health Team used the example of one of their community events to help engage and involve local people in shaping oral health services. The event took place in Kilbirnie and involved almost 300 people including primary school pupils, teachers, parents, pharmacy and dental staff.
The primary school children took part in a 'Britain's Got Talent' style contest, with categories including singing, dancing, poetry and musical instruments - all with an oral health theme. This informal approach allowed for maximum engagement with everyone who attended.
Attendees also found out about what to expect when visiting the dentist, entered competitions and visited market stalls with information on various topics including the oral health pharmacy project, breastfeeding, K:A Leisure and the Community Safety Forum.
Jim Crichton, Director of Primary Care and Mental Health Services, commented: "This is a fantastic achievement for the Oral Health Promotion Team and it's great to have their hard work recognised at a national level. Finding new and innovative ways of promoting oral health can sometimes be challenging, but this shows that it can be fun and engaging. Well done to the whole team!"
