MP backs animal testing petition
Cathy Jamieson MP is calling on constituents in Kilmarnock and Loudoun to sign a petition to end animal testing for cosmetics sold in the EU.
Despite UK and EU bans on animal testing for cosmetics, products can still be tested on animals in other parts of the world and then imported and sold in the EU. A marketing ban which would end this cruelty is due to come into effect in 2013.
However, the ban is in danger of being delayed, meaning that hundreds of thousands more rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats will be injected, gassed or force-fed cosmetics worldwide for new beauty products sold in the EU, including the UK.
Several animal rights charities are fighting to keep the 2013 ban and Cathy showed her support for the campaign by signing the BUAV's No Cruel Cosmetics petition at a recent reception in Parliament. So far, over 150,000 people across the UK and EU have signed the petition, which will be sent to the European Parliament.
Cathy said: "The use of animals to test cosmetics is outdated and wrong. I urge the European Commission to listen to the tens of thousands of people backing the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign, and encourage people in Kilmarnock and Loudoun to show their support for it."
Michelle Thew, Chief Executive of BUAV, said: "We are delighted to have support from Cathy for our campaign to end cruel tests on animals for beauty products sold in the EU. Testing on animals is cruel and unnecessary. Please sign our petition to the European Parliament at www.nocruelcosmetics.org."
