TRIBUTES were this week flooding in after the sudden death of popular Muirkirk councillor Jimmy Kelly, who died aged 72.

The veteran Labour politician was taken to Ayr Hospital in the early hours of Friday but died the following morning after losing his battle with illness.

Jimmy had been unwell over Christmas when doctors discovered a tumour in his oesophagus.

Son David McCulloch, 41, said: "People knew Jimmy as a passionate politician. But he was a caring family man. He was a brilliant dad to me and wife to my mum Isobel.

"He didn't know anything about the tumour but it had obviously been there for a while. It was very sudden."

Jimmy's body will be taken the chapel in Muirkirk on Wednesday at 7pm and his funeral service will take place the following day from noon.
