On The Right Path
A PROJECT to improve paths throughout New Cumnock is aiming to boost tourism for the village.
And farmers and landowners in New Cumnock can receive a slice of £120,000 Ayrshire LEADER cash funding to pay for path improvements on their property.
The project by East Ayrshire Coalfield Environment Initiative hopes to improve the health of villagers and boost tourism to the area by promoting walking paths, bike routes and scenic trails.
East Ayrshire Coalfield Environment Initiative Project Officer, Liam Plummer said: "The aim of the project is to create a network of accessible, good-quality paths that will enable both the local community and tourists to see the best of New Cumnock and the beautiful countryside around it, as well as providing information about the heritage and wildlife in the area. This should boost tourism to the area, improve recreational access for members of the local community, and provide the opportunity for volunteers to learn new skills."
Von Jackson, organiser of the Afton Dam project hopes the path improvements will let New Cumnock's scenic and historical landscape 'speak for itself'. Von said: "Tourism is the only thing New Cumnock is going to get. The village has historical links to the past with William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Robert Burns and beautiful trails. This is a great initiative and people need to get behind it."
To apply, please contact the CEI Project Officer, Liam Plummer, on 07810 831394 or at liam.plummer@ea-cei.org.uk. A site visit can then be arranged to view the path in question and deliver an information and application pack, which will be filled in once a path specification has been drawn up.
