Young people can get into catering

The Prince’s Trust Scotland, East Ayrshire Council and The Cook School Scotland are teaming up to launch Get Into Cooking, an innovative training programme designed to give young people from East Ayrshire a taste of life in the catering industry, with access to top training facilities and the chance to work with some of Scotland’s most celebrated chefs.

The Trust is looking for 12 young people, aged between 16 and 25 and currently not in employment to take part in a five-week vocational course that will introduce them to a career in catering providing classroom learning, practical advice and work experience placements.

Geraldine Gammell, Director of The Prince’s Trust Scotland, said:

“Get into Cooking is one of our most successful programmes, providing young people with a real taster of just how dynamic and exciting a career in the catering industry can be.

“To be working with East Ayrshire Council and The Cook School Scotland makes this a very exciting time for The Prince’s Trust. I know that by working in partnership and combining our expertise we will be providing East Ayrshire’s young people with an incredible training and development opportunity, leading to sustainable employment for the future.”

Working in partnership with The Cook School Scotland, the young people will be under the tutelage of esteemed chef Steven Doherty, the first British Head Chef of a three star Michelin restaurant in Europe.

Steven Doherty, Chef Director at The Cook School said:

“The team at the Cook School Scotland are both delighted and excited to be involved in the launch of Get into Cooking.

“It is our goal, to give these young people the opportunity through our training and development, a path to really strengthen employment in the catering industry.”

Get into Cooking is already run at a number of locations throughout Scotland, with three out of four young people The Trust helps moving onto a positive destination.

Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration, said:

“This is an excellent opportunity for young people to get training from a top chef coupled with work experience and employability training. The main aim is to get interested young people into jobs in the catering sector and the Get Into Cooking programmes have an excellent record in this respect.”

Get into Cooking is being supported by Big Lottery, The Wood Family Trust, East Ayrshire Council and the European Social Fund.

The Prince’s Trust Scotland supports over 4000 young people each year overcome barriers to success such as homelessness, trouble at school and being raised in care. It offers them support, guidance and skills to embark on education, employment and training.
