SHOW STOPPERS: The gig as it was advertised in the Chronicle.

IT'S not every day one of the world's biggest bands play a set on your doorstep.

But back in April 1969 that very thing happened at Auchinleck Community Centre.

And who was the band?

None other than The Who, of course.

As Auchinleck does its bit to rekindle a music scene with events such as the recent Alive and Kicking Festival, memories have started to flood back to the time local village halls and community centres were a Mecca for live music.

This week Jackie Mitchell has offered a vivid account of the night of Saturday, April 26 when Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and co vowed the packed audience in the centre's somewhat humble surroundings.
