Over 70 children from primary and secondary schools all over East Ayrshire were put through their paces last week when they attended a five day Dance Summer School at Grange Academy.

Over the course of the week the children were taught a range of modern dance themes including Jazz, Hip-Hop and Musical Theatre by dance tutors Louise Atkinson, Carrie Paterson, Pauline Adams and Zara Smith, with help from PE teachers, Jennifer Sharpe and Janice Smith. The Ayrshire Gymnastics Team was also on hand to guide them through some additional gymnastic movements.

The highlight of the week came on the last day when the children put into practice all they had learned by performing in front of 200 parents and friends. Councillor Jim Roberts and Councillor Hugh Ross were among the audience.

Councillor Ross said: “Dance is a really popular activity among our young people and this Dance Summer School has given many local children an opportunity to experience something new and enjoyable over the holiday period, whilst at the same time encouraging healthy exercise.

Councillor Roberts added: “Today’s fabulous dance performance has demonstrated that there is a real wealth of creative talent amongst our young people. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the dance tutors involved in delivering this programme, these children have acquired a whole range of new skills which they confidently and expertly put on show for us today.”

The Dance Summer School was funded by Creative Scotland and Active Schools.
