Celebrating 50 years of Ayr Flower Show won two prestigious awards for East Ayrshire Community Service team - a fantastic achievement considering this was the first year they have entered an exhibit. Their 50th Anniversary celebration garden won them a silver gilt medal and first in the special award for the most innovative garden.
Visiting the stall to offer her congratulations on their achievement Provost Stephanie Young said:” To win a silver gilt medal in the first year of entry is a great achievement. Over twenty offenders undertaking Community Service have been involved in this project since the first seeds were planted at the beginning of the year. They’ve been using planning, design, gardening and construction skills to bring this project to fruition. Aged from sixteen to sixty five, many of these men and women have learned a new appreciation of the work involved and the satisfaction to be gained from growing and maintaining a garden.
All the begonias used in the exhibit were grown from seed. Their yellow and orange colours were chosen specifically to represent the golden anniversary theme. Central to the display was a 50 year old bicycle, sourced from the Killie Can Cycle scheme which recycles bicycles of all ages.
Provost Young continued:” Creating something so beautiful and positive from relatively little has been an inspiration to the team. All the seeds used to grow the 1960 - 2010 flower boxes cost less than £5.00 - a reminder to us all that a little effort and minimal expense can produce something for others to enjoy.”
The display will continue to give pleasure now that the Ayr Flower Show has finished. Rosebank Daycare Centre in London Road Kilmarnock is the new location for the plants which will be maintained in situ by the Community Service squads for the rest of the summer.
