Karen McCulloch, from Kilmarnock, has the best tips and tactics for getting a great travel deal.

Global travel and entertainment deals publisher Travelzoo ® announced today that its search for Britain's Savviest Traveller has ended. The six-week search required entrants to say in 300 words why they think they are the savviest person in Britain when it comes to finding unbeatable travel deals . After reviewing around 1,500 entries, the Travelzoo panel of deal experts decided on Karen.

Phil Salcedo, UK publisher of Travelzoo's Top 20, explained, "Karen's entry stood out because in the 300 words allowed she packed in 12 great tips on how to avoid charges and find great deals. She had the highest number of savvy tips in her entry and we checked them all and they do work. Karen is an honorary Travelzoo deal expert - she has the deal hunting attitude and attention to detail we insist on at Travelzoo. Karen McCulloch explained that her obsession with finding great deals began when she was made redundant from her job at the start of the credit crunch. Unwilling to give up taking holidays, Karen became an expert at tracking down bargain breaks and maximising her hard-earned cash. Karen enjoyed the excitement of tracking down deals, and now that she is back working as a training manager at photographic retailer Jessops, she still deploys her bargain-hunting skills whenever she looks for a travel deal. Karen said, "Even in times of belt-tightening I really do believe it's possible to travel the world and experience other cultures without breaking the bank. In addition to checking out the best deals from Travelzoo's Top 20 each Wednesday, I also always make sure that when I book my travel I use a prepaid MasterCard such as Fairfx.com to avoid nasty charges that budget airlines sometimes add on to your bill.

The silver lining to the ash cloud

Upon contacting Karen about her win, Travelzoo was pleased to hear that she plans to use the prize of a £5,000 holiday from luxury travel provider Mark's Travel for her belated honeymoon. Karen's original honeymoon was cancelled due to the volcanic ash cloud disruptions across Europe earlier this year.
