CHARITY TREK: Nick Martin.

By Alistair Neil

A DRONGAN pensioner is gearing up for a marathon 6350 feet trek up one of the world's most daunting mountains.

67-year-old Nick Martin will RUN the Zermatt Marathon in Switzerland alongside son and daughter Philip and Ruth.

Nick is set to scale the heady heights of the country's deepest mountain valley - which stands at one and a half times the height of Ben Nevis - to raise funds for LEPRA.

The former Auchincruive and Ayr College lecturer will be one of only 29 runners out of a field of almost 900 who are over the age of 65.

And he's adamant that fact will not hinder his progress.

Nick said: "I'm very determined to make it all the way up.

"Running has been something I have always enjoyed and it's very satisfying to pass people younger than me.

"The first 20 miles up the mountain will be quite fun but I'm expecting the remaining six miles to be gruesome. I have had a bad knee which has limited my training to a certain extent but when I'm running it's actually fine, it's only when I stop that I feel it."
