The number of patients recovering with stab wounds in hospital is at a five year high.

The shocking statistics come as a 30-year-old man is arrested for allegedly knifing and robbing a security guard of a five-figure sum of cash outside Tesco, Auchinleck last Tuesday night (May 11).

Cops launched a man hunt after the 52-year-old G4S security guard was rushed to Ayr Hospital stabbed in the armed robbery outside the supermarket at 11.25pm. The security guard was transferred to Ayr Hospital where his condition was described as stable.

Victims of knife crimes totalled 180 bed days in Ayrshire and Arran between 2008 and 09.

Now Carrick, Cumnock and Doon valley MSP Cathy Jamieson has called on the Scottish Government to back tough proposals on knife crime, following the revelation that Ayrshire and Arran NHS is facing a continuing burden as a result of knife attacks.
