New Cumnock voters go old school

Voters in New Cumnock will now vote at the former Castle Primary School at the General Election on Thursday 6 May instead of the Community Learning Centre.

The change was agreed by East Ayrshire Council following a site inspection by the Returning Officer's staff for the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock constituency, which identified a number of access issues.

Major roadworks on the A76 along Castle would have meant very restricted access on polling day for both cars and pedestrians to the Learning Centre and safe access could not be guaranteed. The old Castle Primary School was used for many years as a polling place and has ramped access for wheelchairs and some off-street parking.

David Anderson, Returning Officer for the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock Constituency, said: "Our main priority is to make sure voters get to the poll as safely as possible. The roadworks are expected to last for 20 weeks and were arranged long before the date of the election was announced. Although I have responsibility for running the election, it is the local authority that chooses the buildings where people vote. I am grateful to East Ayrshire Council for resolving this problem as soon as it was drawn to their attention. Every voter in New Cumnock will shortly receive a letter from me advising them of the new arrangements."
