ELIZABETH URIARTE

(Liz Guthrie)

After a long a courageous battle with cancer Liz Uriarte died on Saturday, April 14 at her home in Dalmellington surrounded by her family.

I heard the news that Liz was losing her battle with the disease during February and only had a short time remaining. A close family friend I immediately remembered the many times I taunted and tormented her at weekends when she stayed over at my parents' house in New Cumnock with my sister during their teenage years.

Although she remained close friends with my sister after their marriages, our paths only rarely crossed over the last 30 odd years. Several months ago although gravely ill she took the time and trouble to visit my mother who was recovering from major surgery. It spoke volumes for her character to be concerned about others.

I decided to visit Liz on Sunday February 14 to pay my respects and to offer my apologies for my crass and foolish behaviour during our youth, citing only youthful immaturity as an excuse.

Knowing there is nothing you can say or do at these times I approached her house feeling awkward and uneasy, knowing my social skills are not what they could be. I decided that I would spend ten minutes or so and leave some flowers that I had bought in a supermarket the night before. Taking the flowers Liz burst out laughing pointing out that she was married as she read out the pre-printed message BE MY VALENTINE.

I left the house almost two hours later feeling much better than when I arrived in awe of her spirit, infectious humour and above all her courage. In fact she joked, "I hope they don't find a cure next week as I have had that many visitors I feel obligated to die,"

Before I left she asked if I could arrange an obituary in the local paper. "I know these things are only for dignitaries, royalty and famous people and it's not for my ego I just think it would be a good laugh."

"I have little talent for that sort of thing but I will give it some thought," I replied.

Having given it some thought, obituaries ARE for people like Liz. while not famous perhaps, she lived her life to the full. She was a loving wife and mother, a true and loyal friend, a considerate neighbour as well as being part of a close-knit family.

Possessing an infectious sense of humour and fun, she also raised money for several charities when she was fit and able. Liz took up some charitable causes following the death of her sister Catherine from the same dreadful disease over 15 years ago.

The daughter of the late Robert and Mary Guthrie and eldest sister to Catherine, Bobby, Suzanne and Helena. Liz moved with her family from Kelloholm to Dalhanna Drive, New Cumnock following the death of her father. In 1968 her mother married James Morrison who has been father to the family for over 40 years.

Happily married to Lewis Uriarte and living in Dalmellington for 30 years with their loving son Russell, Liz was warmly embraced by the Uriarte family and the community of Dalmellington who made her one of their own.

She in turn loved the place and its people dearly. I'm sure everyone who knew Liz from schooldays in Kelloholm and New Cumnock, her working life at Bata, Shinwells, Mona Lewis, Falmers and latterly in Dalmellington Co-op, as a neighbour, a friend or socially will be all the better for having known her.

Could I take the opportunity to express our sincere and heartfelt condolences to all the family.
