Cumnock Bowling Club, which turns 142 this year, is launching a new campaign to get more young people interested in bowling - starting with a Junior Open Day on Sunday 25 April between 2pm and 5pm.
The club is hoping to inspire a new generation of bowlers - and maybe even find a champion who could take Scotland to victory in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
As part of the 'Get on the Green' campaign the club will open its doors to youngsters and their families, who will be able to show off their skills in a series of challenges including target practice on the green. Ian Nisbet, President of the Club, said:
"We're very excited about getting Cumnock families along to show them everything bowls has to offer. Bowling has an unfair reputation as being a sport for older people but this is not the case - our club has members from as young as 10 up to 81 years of age. We want to show that bowls can be enjoyed by all of the family and I would urge any junior (aged 10 to 15) who is interested to come down and meet us on Sunday."
Bowling clubs across Scotland are being helped to rejuvenate the sport by Taylor Bowls, the UK's leading bowls manufacturer. Laura Heron of Taylor Bowls said:
"Bowling is one of the biggest participant sports and encourages a healthy lifestyle amongst players. Scotland has a strong reputation worldwide for the sport. In fact, we've won 21 medals at Commonwealth level, making us 3rd in the world.
"I'm sure people in Cumnock will have a fantastic day out at this Open Day, and hopefully someone from the area will go on to help Scotland add to its tally of medals."
Cumnock Bowling Club is hosting a series of events over the coming weeks as part of the 'Get on the Green' campaign, including a schools' coaching programme, a junior interclub league and a Fun Day. For more information on any of these events, please contact the club.
