Extending major roadworks from six to 20 weeks will be a disaster, say New Cumnock businesses.
Operation managers Amey say they are "really disappointed by the regrettable delay" but local companies won't get any compensation.
The roadworks on The Castle started on March 15 and will continue until August because of shallow utility lines. Workers have had to painstakingly "hand dig" the road surface so as not to sever gas mains, cut power lines or burst water supplies.
However local businesses say they have been hit hard by the disruption. Lavinia McGarva, of Afton Service Station says by the time the roadworks have finished her garage will have lost thousands in passing trade.
She said: "It's a disaster for us. There's absolutely no compensation and it's going to get worse. The roadworks have cut the whole village off. It couldn't have happened at a worse time when we're coming out of a recession.
"People aren't held up for too long by the convoy but it's frustrating looking out and seeing no one at the pumps. There's no one coming in. On Saturdays and Sundays it's a waste of time being open at all. Continuing it to 20 weeks is a nightmare. We'll be ready for closing our doors."
