ROADWORKERS in New Cumnock have uncovered the fossilised remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex).
The almost perfect remains were unearthed opposite Afton Service Station late last night after Amey roadworkers bored several metres into the street to avoid gas, electricity and telephone lines.
And New Cumnock residents have dubbed the Cretaceous beast - which measured up to 12.8m in length, 4 metres in height, and weighing a hefty 6.8 tons - as "Big Rab".
Since it was first discovered in 1905, Tyrannosaurus rex has become the most widely recognized dinosaur species in popular culture having featured in the Jurassic Park movies.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Natural History Musuem called it "the most impressive dinosaur find in Europe". She added: "To find a complete specimen is almost unheard of. This is a remarkable find."
Now the BBC is in talks to feature the village in the fourth season of Saturday night fantasy drama Primeval.
ADDED POST APRIL 1:
No-one was fooled into believing a T-rex skeleton had been discovered in New Cumnock for the Chronicle's April Fool. And as for the Scottish Natural History Museum - there isn't one.
