Kelloholm and Kirkconnel Village Pride Group are celebrating after scooping a top community award for their first ever Christmas Lights Switch-on.

Upper Nithsdale Councillor, John Syme expressed his praise to the group's prestigious win of 'Community Event of the Year' described as making "community engagement at the heart of the event".

TV Sports personality Dougie Donnelly compered the Nithsdale Community Achievements Awards event run by Dumfries & Galloway Arts Association held at DG One on Sunday February 28. And dedicated volunteers in Kelloholm & Kirkconnel Gala Committee helped the organisation win the Mind and Upper Nithsdale Community Group of the Year for their role in fundraising to provide the village Gala week for more than 20 years.

Councillor Syme said: "I am particularly pleased for the community as this clearly reflects how it works together to deliver what was an amazingly popular and successful event. This was the first time the community had organised a Christmas lights switch-on event and on the night thousands of people from near and afar turned out to enjoy the event."
