A CATRINE woman has slammed the litter louts who she claims are ruining the village's image.
And Valerie McCowan claims visitors will be put off returning to Catrine if nothing is done to combat the mess.
Valerie, from Bridge Street, spoke out after stumbling across a host of rubbish throughout the area. Parts of the popular River Ayr walk are also cluttered with litter, something she fears could hamper the village's long term reputation.
She slammed: "The instances of fly tipping are certainly on the rise and it seems to be becoming a regular occurrence under the bridge on the main street.
"The River Ayr walk brings a lot of people through Catrine and to see parts of the walk covered in rubbish is very off-putting."
Valerie is calling for more rubbish bins to be placed around the area, and for existing bins to emptied more often.
She believes more signs warning people against dropping litter would also help ease the problem, adding: "Folk need to be more aware of the need to take their rubbish home with them or to put it in the bin."
Her outburst comes as the Scottish Environmental Agency (SEPA) step up their efforts to tackle river pollution across Ayrshire.

Like many towns and villages in Ayrshire, Catrine is being tarnished by "the few". Look at the Afton Water in New Cumnock and the Lugar Water at Cumnock, both are used as dump sites and as usual it will be volunteers who will clean up the mess. Like the River Ayr, walks along the banks of these waterways should be a pleasure for locals and visitors alike. It's time that the dumping was stopped. Make it easier to get rubbish uplifted and then fine the chuckers.

I am a wee bit upset with the chronicals print of this. The point of my photo`s was to show how nice a place we all live in the hope that it will make people proud of where their from , therefore make them aware of the simple measures that we can all take to keep it beautiful. It would have been better if they had printed the lovely pictures that are available not jus of catrine but of ayrshire.
there was only actually one of the sentences printed that i said, about more rubbish bins. I feel i have been portrayed as a moaning minnie and im surprised they didnt finish the artical off with " the young ones of today.

I understand your concerns Valerie, and NO BODY loves winding up Dougie and his staff any more than me, BUT they did try to run a middle of the road report. They were left needing to raise the issue about dumping and also to promote the beauty of Catrine. I feel they did a reasonable (choking) good job on this piece. But well done on raising this issue and well done The Chronic ill. Windup coming.
It is difficult to promote a place whose name rhymes with Latrine LOL.

Well done val, nice and simple, David sloan, You talk****e. "I understand your concerns" you just justified the paper's total disregard for the truth and made a joke. The paper had a spot to do on river polution and thought that flatery would get photo's for thier already writin piece. Again, well done Val.

I don't think you come off as a moaning minnie, val. These things had to be said and you said it well even if i cant comment on misquotes. Fly tipping is a problem in every part of our area and not just Catrine. We have already seen your pictures here, been on for a couple of weeks now I think, and just looking at some of the other photos show just how beautiful our area can be.And that is a point, Steven. Valeries photos had already been put here, so what are you talking about? I have read the whole thing in the paper and sure they wanted to do a thing on fly tipping and the rest so why would they not contact Valerie, who i presume had sent her original pictures beforehand? If we don;t talk out about these things, let the powers that be know that we are not happy, then nothing will ever get done. Mind you, it is not the council fault, or the police or any political party - the people that do this are lazy, messy and have no regard for anything but themself. But then, maybe stiffer fines are needed and i take Geoffs point about making it easier for rubbish to be uplifted. I see it where i stay - rubbish tossed into passing places, fridges dumped, tellys. They cant be bothered driving to Skares so they just throw it anywhere. So well said, Val - and lets see more people supporting the message than having a go at each other or even shooting the messenger.

Well said Bill.
Nothing beats free speech. Some folks are allowed to use this site to attack people, but if you respond, its removed.
Maybe the Chronic ill need to look at themselves. So much for supporting "The Staff".
