Kilmarnock College host local Job Summit

Ann McKechin MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Scotland Office, hosted a Job Summit aimed at 'Supporting Ayrshire back to Work' at Kilmarnock College on Thursday 25 February.

The summit welcomed local businesses, councils, MPs and MSPs to discuss the support needed by employers from the UK Government to help them through the current economic downturn. The UK Government was also keen to assess awareness of Jobcentre Plus provisions and other government initiatives in place to combat unemployment within the local business community.

Ann McKechin MP said: "It is important that we examine how effective government interventions have been in order that we can ensure that the right help is reaching the right people. The Job Summit at Kilmarnock College, allowed us to directly interact with local businesses and hear first-hand how these interventions are helping and the extent to which they are being effectively communicated to employers."

The Secretary of State for Scotland Jim Murphy MP recently outlined a number of challenges facing Scotland at the National Jobs Summit in Glasgow. One obstacle highlighted was the need to deal with youth unemployment throughout the country.

Principal of Kilmarnock College, Heather Dunk, said: "We were delighted to host the Ayrshire Job Summit - Keeping Ayrshire Working on 25 February. Kilmarnock College understands the importance of meeting the needs of local employers and this event provided the perfect platform for constructive dialogue between key stakeholders. Over 50 delegates attended the event, with representation from a multiple of sectors"
