More than 270 drug users are being treated in Cumnock and Doon Valley for addiction to opiate based drugs including heroin, codeine and morphine.

Shocking stats have revealed East Ayrshire as the worst in Scotland for drug waiting times in Scotland and second worst for problem drug use. And according to the latest Scottish Government drug prevalence report the estimated number of people in East Ayrshire using opiate based drugs stands at 1834.

But the health board has blamed the inexpensiveness and availability of drugs as the main scourge of the problem.
