More than 500 pupils from secondary schools across East Ayrshire found out that they 'could do it too' at a recent Enterprise in Action event in Kilmarnock's Park Hotel.

Each young person took part in two hands-on workshops run by local organisations and each also had the opportunity to visit all other workshops to gather information. The youngsters enjoyed trying their hands at music recording, bricklaying, fashion, childcare, food preparation, photography... and much more. Workshops were specifically designed by local businesses and organisations to inspire the students and help them find out more about different careers.

Organisations which took part were: PULSE recording studio, Goodrich, British Energy, Arnold Clark, Kilmarnock College, Land Engineering, Galleon, Occupational Therapy, Alzheimer's Scotland, Ayr College, Royal Air Force, Solar Wind Applications, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, M McLachlan Photography, gr8enterprises and United Renewables Ltd.

U Can Do It 2 was jointly organised by the Council's Determined to Succeed team and officers from Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce.

Councillor Jim Roberts, Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning, said: "This was a highly successful day, due to the enthusiasm of the pupils and the immense amount of work put into the workshops by all organisations represented. I'd like to thank all those involved for giving of their time in this way, to help and inspire the young people who attended.

"By bringing together education, employers, parents and carers there is a greater chance of preparing young people for a successful life beyond school."

Graham Short, Director of Educational & Social Services, said: "Appropriately focused Career Education is one of the main strands of the Determined to Succeed initiative. It is important that pupils are aware of local and national opportunities and have the chance to talk to and work with employers.

"Determined to Succeed is happening in all Scottish schools. Teachers are embracing the strategy and delivering their subjects in an enterprising way, making learning more relevant to life beyond school and increasing the understanding of business and commerce in our young people."
