Baird Celebrates Cumnock Charter Today

The citizens of Cumnock will take a step back in time on 26th September as The Baird Museum and Art Gallery, Cumnock hosts a celebratory event paying tribute to the five hundredth centenary year of the signing of the Royal Burgh Charter.

The event will play host to a re-enactment group, who will undertake historic presentations including: James IV's Herald who will open the fair by orating the granting of "Burgh of Barony" to Cumnock in 1509.

Since the original Burgh was set up for the purposes of promoting trade and commerce, a number of local businesses and craft organisations will have stalls in a medieval style market.

The museum will exhibit the Cumnock Coat of Arms, alongside collections from the period. Specially created costumes from the period, hand stitched by textile students from East Ayrshire, will be displayed. Visitors will also have the opportunity to gain a feel for the times, dressing up in typical medieval clothing.

Other highlights include women's period make up and grooming demonstrations; period food and ingredients table; weaponry presentations and a saddlery exhibit. The text from the Charter of 1509, will be available for people to read.

Councillor Iain Linton, Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning said: " Cumnock was originally installed as a Burgh to generate and foster trade and industry within the district and beyond. This event is a fun way of looking at the past and seeing how everyday life was lived. It also provides us with a reminder that we still have vibrant companies trading and producing products in our community. Bringing them together in the spirit of the Burgh 500 Anniversary is a reminder that there is still plenty to celebrate about Cumnock today."

The event runs from 11am to 1pm and refreshments are available within the museum.

  Why no mention in the printed Chronicle?
  
  There always seems to be much,much more information on the web-site.
  
  This was a fun event which could have cheered us all up, firstly, if it had been advertised, secondly, if it was reported on after it took place.
  
  I like the logo "Cumnock 500" but have only seen it on the web-page.
