Cumnock cops have called on the public to pick up the phone and help them beat the area's growing underage drinking problem.

The plea from local police comes after a heavy police presence of officers had to attend in Catrine last week to tackle a number of cases of disorder and street drinking.

Three fixed penalty notices were issued by officers attempting to clamp down on the problem.

Furious residents reported disturbing scenes in Institute Avenue and in the area of the Games Hall as police tried to move youngsters on. One local said: "it was dreadful, there were kids as young as 13 in an awful state."
