Sick vandals knocked over 16 gravestones at the weekend - some of which had stood for a century.

Between 3.30pm on Friday June 26 and 6.45am on Saturday, the vandals rampaged through Muirkirk Cemetery on Glasgow Road.

And one of the stones badly damaged by the callous thugs was that of a young child.

Councillor Jimmy Kelly condemned the mindless acts. He said: 'It"s unbelievable. You"d think people would be allowed to rest in peace.

"Some of these headstones have been standing for more than a century and these idiots come and pull them over. The sad thing is there will be no one left alive to fix some of them.'
