Ten drivers were killed in fatal road collisions last year in Dumfries and Galloway.
But Cops say they will improve their response by analysing why accidents occur.
DG Police revealed the number of fatalities and serious road traffic collisions were down over a four year average.
On comparing the 2008 road casualties against the 1994-98 average used by the Government as a baseline to measure targets. Deaths fell by 55 per cent; 45 per cent reduction people killed or seriously injured; and 11 per cent reduction in all injury accidents. However slight accidents rose by 28.
Inspector Gordon McKnight from the Roads Policing and Specialist Support Unit said: 'We are not content to sit back thinking we have done a good job, we have reviewed our structure to improve co-ordination of our response to Road safety. We now employ a road policing analyst to improve our understanding of where, why and when collisions are occurring.
'We recognise that road safety is everyone"s responsibility. We work very closely with our partners and we are part of the recently formed Dumfries and Galloway Road Safety Partnership. Our overall aim is to reduce casualties and make our regions roads safer for everyone.
