Scottish Water is advising customers across East Ayrshire to wrap up their homes and save pounds this winter.

Protecting your pipes can help you avoid the agony of a burst, which could potentially ruin costly carpets, furniture and bedding.

Director of Communications, Chris Wallace is calling on customers to protect their home this winter in order to avoid the misery caused by burst pipes:

'This Christmas, Scottish Water is encouraging householders to wrap up their pipes as well as their presents. Temperatures start to rise after a cold snap and this change in temperature can cause pipes to burst. Although winters have been warmer over the last few years, there"s no telling when a cold snap might bite as we have been seeing in some areas across Scotland already this month.

"We want homeowners to get prepared now so that they can enjoy the festive season and that"s why we are urging them to start thinking about protecting their pipes now. There can be nothing more chilling than coming home to find your home ankle deep in freezing water and your furniture, carpets and beds all ruined because of a burst pipe. If people simple steps now to heat, insulate and protect their homes now, then they can enjoy peace of mind that their home is wrapped up for winter, which in turn will help to reduce the risk of any repair bills for burst pipes.'

Scottish Water has a series of simple tips that customers can follow in order to beat the bite:

Heat -

Leave your heating on at a low temperature.

Make sure heaters are well-maintained and working properly. Leave a key and contact details with neighbours or family if you are going away.

Insulate -

check loft insulation is thick and in good condition.

Protect -

Have any leaks at taps or valves repaired.

Fit draught excluders to your doors and windows.

Scottish Water also recommends that you locate your stop valve which is usually under the kitchen sink and keep a note of necessary telephone numbers i.e. registered plumber.

Chris Wallace concluded: 'Because householders are poorly prepared for the winter, all too often their homes are damaged. This year we"re asking them to follow these simple tips, giving them one less thing to worry about over the winter.

'By taking measures to heat, insulate and protect your water pipes now your home will be protected.'

In preparation for a sharp temperature drop, we have advice online and are working with local press, Housing Associations, Community Councils and Libraries to make sure homeowners throughout Scotland are aware of how they can protect their home.
