Otters in the River Nith are set to be safeguarded in a half-a-million protected species scheme backed by Scottish Water.
The animals were discovered at the Nithsbridge Sewage Pumping Station outside Kirkconnel after engineers discovered evidence of a local otter population.
Work was immediately halted at the site and applied for a protected species licence.
Scottish Water have took extensive measures to ensure the safety of the water mammals and to ensure they continue to thrive.
