A PETITION has been launched to support the campaign to introduce heart screening aimed at cutting the number of sudden deaths among young sportsmen and women.

Drongan mum Heather McEwan, whose husband Ian died at the age of 36 from Cardiomyopathy, has called for improved testing in recent years and she will be gathering names for the petition, released by the charity Scottish Hart.

Heather"s two children are screened annually for Cardiomyopathy and, with Cathy Jamieson MSP supporting Scottish Hart"s campaign, she is hopeful that the Scottish Government will introduce a National Screening Programme.

Young people involved in sports are at most risk from Cardiomyopathy and only identifying the problem can give them the best chance of survival.

The recent death of Motherwell Football Club Captain Phil O"Donnell from heart failure has brought the problem of heart-related sudden death back into the public attention and it is now that action must be taken, according to Heather.
